Whoosh [19 Apr 2006|01:23pm]
April 19th, Away against Caldwell: Loss, 4-11

In the end, what surprises me is that they didn't beat us by more. Whoosh is the sound of them blowing by us - they were so damned quick. I played with these guys in Winter League, and they were even better than then. The goalie saved everything I could put at him, which is no surprise since he was the reason we were even still in some of the winter games. The other team would be beating the crap out of our defense, but not score.

Our first two goals were by James, since the other goalie also named Mike had no idea where the ball was going. The second one he just sort of sat there, and everyone stood confused until one of the refs was like, "it's a goal." Iiinteresting.

Ilya scored on a 3-men up play. I've never seen that before, but when we were two men up, I got slashed in the head. And Ilya passed it to the only person with defenders on him - Chris, in the center, who got thrashed as a result. We lucked out in terms of scoring, which is pathetic.

One kid on the other team was behind the goal and faked a pass. He then stood there looking like he had in fact given up the ball, then when the defense was busy looking for it, he ran up to the goal and scored. Aiee.

The height of our offensive power [17 Apr 2006|10:37pm]
April 17th, Home against Mount Olive: Win, 9-4

Yet again we beat a really weak team. There's not anything to be proud of - they should not have scored 4 times. Hell, one was an own goal!

Ilya was actually useful on offense for something other than pissing us, the refs, and the other team off (although that happened too). With three assists and a goal, he now leads in assists. And is third in goals, behind Chris and myself. Double digits!

4 goals for Chris, 3 for me, 1 for Ilya, and 1 for Frank. I have a nice excel spreadsheet now, which is fitting seeing as I have to go through the stat book after each game to make sure they added correctly. I have 14 points (10+4), Ilya has 12 (5+7), Chris has 8 (7+1), and everyone else that would be on this list has 4.

Ah! We should check if my father's creepy new camera got any reasonable pictures. He didn't get any goals, but the first two weren't impressive anyway. The third was JV style! Yeehaw! Yeah, I'm done. Caldwell tomorrow is a littttle bit better.

Fire good [14 Apr 2006|03:39pm]
April 15th, Away against Clifton: Loss, 5-9

Friday I redid the shooting string, and although everything is quite messed up, it works. I fused some strings, hence the fire being good, although phosphorous in the nose is not as fun as it sounds.

Yet again, we jumped out into a deficit. Down 3-0... familiar. We rallied back and got two, but they matched us. Their goals were quick and easy, since we just let them walk on us. Also familiar. A depressing game, I must say.

James tripled his goal count, two defenders got assists, Chris picked off a goalie's throw and scored, I scored on man up, and assisted the last of the game, by James.

Side note: After last game I went through the stat book and fixed some things. I noticed today that one was unfixed -- namely, the one where the person said 1+1=3. Who corrected my correction? Brilliant!

Beating up on little kids. Yeaaah [12 Apr 2006|09:59pm]
April 12th, Home against North Warren: Win, 6-2

Finally! Granted, they were a first year team, but at least we won. Although even that wasn't certain when we were down 1-0, and up only 3-2 at the end of the 3rd.

I scored the 1st and 6th goals, but could have had more if my stick hadn't died on me. My first two shots wouldn't leave the stick. Come on, guys, I know it's comfortable, but seriously, you had your time. Move on to bigger and better netting, and I don't mean the goalie's stick. Apparently my shooting string came loose, and when I tried to shoot, the ball just burrowed in and wouldn't come out until the followthrough. They called me off, gave me the Valones stick, and then put me back on the field. I scored not too much later, but the rest of that half I couldn't put shots on goal, they all went a little right.

I spent halftime shooting (and getting my arm nice and sore) to see if my stick was working - it wasn't. The restringing job by Valones wasn't quite the same. I used Frank's stick the rest of the game. So I scored twice with two sticks, neither of which were mine. (I realized after the game that I could have used my old stick...)

Ilya had 2 goals and 2 assists, Brian the sophomore got his first goal and assisted me, and Nick scored.

No practice until the Clifton game, since tomorrow is NJSL and friday is off.

Wow. Water sucks. [10 Apr 2006|10:08pm]
[ mood | <- first time in so long ]

April 8th, Away against Morris Catholic : Loss 3-4, triple or so overtime.

That is what we call an embarassment. I went scoreless (but assisted Frank on his first goal), we're now 0-3, and now more of our players are injured. I got congratulated sort of by the coaches for actually running the full ten laps despite, you know, ankle owies.

An area of a few square inches of my left leg is purple! Whee! Overall everything is healing, at least on me. We'll see if we can get back our ankle-deficient defenseman, thumb-deficient Chris, or kidney-deficient shooter. Ai ai ai.

We play a first year varsity team on Wednesday at home. Seriously, if we don't blow them out of the water, we should just hide in shame.

That was a pretty crappy birthday. But I have a license now. Yeah. That's about it.

Although I did treat myself to some DVD's with the employee discount to make up for it.

Boonton. The name is silly enough as is. [05 Apr 2006|01:02am]
[ music | Rage - How I could just kill a man ]

April 4th, Away against Boonton : Loss, 4-7.

Disregarding the fact that 4-7 is my birthday, this game was so much like Edison it saddens me. Boonton is Edison reincarnate... by which I mean the town. Screw zombies.

We were down 5-4 after I scored, but we let two quick goals put us down and out.

I assisted Chris twice, including the play that I think I may never be able to top since it was just so damned perfect (man up pass to the middle). Ilya scored his first and only. I was assisted by that sophomore again. We were man up and I just kinda shot it from the outside. Their field was so bad it bounced and went top corner. Class.

Apparently, the two injured players are the two with the goals, the assists, and the ground balls. Cripples dominating... that's a bad sign.

Loss to Wayne Hills? April Fools... damn. [02 Apr 2006|09:29pm]
[ music | Cold - Stupid Girl ]

April 1st, Home against Wayne Hills : Loss, 4-14.

We got thrashed, which is pretty depressing, seeing as we opened against them last year and won 16-9. Not to mention the fact that all they could do was pass (though they certainly did it better than we did) yet they were able to beat the defense as though it weren't there.

On the plus side, I scored the first three goals of the season. I got congratulated by coaches which was weird (I even balked when Coach Andrew came over, prompting him to say "what, you thought I was going to hit you for not scoring six goals?") considering I didn't even get to start or play essentially at all the first quarter. All the time I got was about a minute, in which time I dropped a pass, lost the fight for the resulting ground ball, and got hit in the ankle. I made up for it by scoring once a quarter for the rest of the game, I guess.

The postgame locker room riffraff was goddamned ridiculous. Some people just have no respect.

There's so much brutal irony in all of this. The shouting match about how one player (who wasn't allowed to play due to his own stupidity) believes the coach yells at players too much is one example. Another is the last line of the last paragraph - saying that on the internet is interesting, since the internet is like 70% liberal, which by definition is disrespect. OK, not exactly, but still.

Oh, and my thumb now hurts like a mofo. At least I didn't break it like our friend Chris, who, I swear, has got to be made of glass. Although he did play, which was pretty damn un-glass-like.

As of late [30 Mar 2006|09:03pm]
[ music | Cold - Stupid Girl ]

The problem with late entries is that they can change meaning and/or lose it.

I know I had something to say thursday the 30th, and something to say the 31st that contradicted it... but right now I remember very little of each.

Thursday: My entry would have been something along the lines of "It's interesting, I'm not sure I've ever been this filled with contempt in my life. And I was a tormented kid. 'You don't know the hate I have inside' (yes, again)"

Friday: My entry would have been something along the lines of "Frisbee can cure anything. Even pissed off ankles."

Ah! I remember something else I would have said on thursday, which I guess ties into this ex post entry and its lateness. See, take the 17 people I have listed as acquaintances. (take them... please). One is me, so that's 16. One is Harry who is added for stalking purposes (15). One lives in a fantasy world (14). One I prefer to deal with in person (13). One I don't even know or want to (12). One I just can't trust (11). One I have no need for communication with (10). Two aren't really around at all (8). Two are nice but that's all (6). Two are nice, trustworthy, but rare here - better channels exist (4). Two I do not value the opinions of (2). And two I'm tempted to remove entirely.

Sweet, I've just discounted almost every person who has ever seen this. Take that, umm... I think.

30 STM concert last night, awesome.

Today:
OLIN
I did it. I've waited for this for 4 years, essentially.

I wish I had someone to celebrate this with, but body-checking Albert sufficed. Not to mention literally jumping for joy ... in the main office. In front of Mr. Davis and some guy who was there for AMUN. Mr Davis just looked at me and was like "...college acceptance?"

If only you knew, Russ. If only you knew.

Week of hell, Pt III [18 Mar 2006|02:08pm]
It should be nearing an end. I hope. If this hell continues and I lose Olin because of it... it will not be pretty.

After going to an orthopedist and finding out my type 2 strain wasn't anything more serious, I went to our scrimmage in Clifton. I had to watch from the sideline as our team shamed itself again. I had to watch as Ilya took stupid shots because he'd "realized" that it was the only way we would score. I had to watch friggin Lee be right in front of the goal but not even get the shot off because he tried to do it sidearm - in close, it's not power that matters, damnit!

When I got home I had three college responses.

MIT, Caltech, and Stevens were the three. Olin is "late March", Columbia is April 1st, and Cooper... who knows or cares?

I went 2-1. And one of those three was my safety. I pray for Olin, because otherwise this choice will be difficult. I no longer can say "I don't want to go so far away" because right now, I do.

Week of hell, Pt II [16 Mar 2006|08:26pm]
It continues. Beautiful.

I wasted hours Wednesday because I was measuring 4 GHz instead of 4 THz, and I left a note for the kid on Thursday, explaining it to him as the clueless boy he is. Thursday I get panicked emails, 4 of them, because he still doesn't get it. Beautiful.

After that, and of course the depressing awkwardness, I go to lacrosse. And get injured. I get a stick check to the throat to start it off, then later in practice I screw up my ankle. At least I didn't have to run suicides... although practice still was suicidal - Wednesday: 8 laps, 13 sprints; Thursday: 8 laps, suicides. Beautiful.

Apparently it's a type II sprain, which means it could be worse. Still freaking hurts. Beautiful.

And now, according to Nikita, I'm a gimp. Beautiful.

The time has come (Mark II) [05 Mar 2006|09:57pm]
[ mood | ecstatic ]
[ music | Chevelle - Don't Fake This ]

I have returned from a freaking awesome weekend: Candidate's Weekend 2006 #2!

Interestingly enough, it's harder than I thought to write about this, because, well, bringing the memories back to the foreground makes me want to do a dance or something of the kind. This action precludes efficient typing.

A decent analogy about the weekend: Imagine there's a vaccuum cleaner. And you like it because you know it's powerful, light, and inexpensive. Now, imagine that a guy comes up to you and gives you a sales pitch about the item you already wanted, informing you that in addition to cleaning your floors, it does your homework, earns you international fame, doubles as a weapon, and they throw in a t-shirt. Imagine how much you'd want this vaccuum cleaner.

Yes, they threw in a t-shirt. Expect to see me in it tomorrow (3/6). It will be awesome. You may never be the same, I know I won't.

This recap is as much for me as it is for you. Thus, it's excessively detailed, and will bore the pants off of you. Mainly because I'm wearing shorts, and am thus immune.

The time has come [02 Mar 2006|06:32pm]
[ music | Nothingface - I Diablo ]

Tomorrow you will not see me, although depending on who you are this may or may not be different from the norm. Sneaky.

I'm going to Olin for candidate's weekend. I told Mr. Defalco this, and he told me to talk to Adam, since he'd done it... I believe the technical term is "facepalm". Mr. Defalco both forgot that juniors do not apply to colleges, and that visits are not "candidate weekend"s. Aiaiai.

So yes, this is going to be crazy. Not the weekend, or the "social interaction" (what the hell is that? other people? huh?) if you will, but the car ride. I wonder if my dad will make me drive any of it. I also wonder how much they will be near me for.

"Let's hope you're not [irritable] this weekend"
"That's really up to you, dad."

[Note: the music is an example of a song going from being considered too boring to even listen through it to topping the charts. wtf, indeed.]

Science Bowl the 2006 [24 Feb 2006|10:08pm]
[This is all available on my bergen.org site]

Thanks to Mr. Scarpone keeping the records, I was able to do some stats and stuff. I'm such a number whore. Anyway, for those of you who don't know:
We came in 2nd place.

East Brunswick won again, but we beat the team that booted us last year (a windsor of some sort).

Citing the Harry, "The tournament is double-elimination - you start out in the no-loss bracket; upon losing, you get knocked down to the one-loss bracket. Lose there, you're out; at the end, the winner of the no-loss and the one-loss have to play each other - though of course, the one-loss winner has to beat the no-loss winner twice in order to win."

Our team, the fiercest pack you've ever seen, was Myself, Andrew, Molly, and Emi, as Captain, 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

Recap )
All in all, I guess we did ok.

Some stats will go here tomorrow. I have them in Excel (yes, I'm serious) but it's 11:48 and the 17+ hour work day is not approved by the FDA. So I'll just put the easy one:

We outscored our opponents 696 - 474.
The 696 = 256 (64 tossups) + 420 (42 bonuses [66%]) + 20 (5 penalties)
Of the 474 against, 260 (55%) were East Brunswick A.

Marc is a number whore, and did these stats )

Obsession! [18 Feb 2006|10:09pm]

[ music | ALL OF IT ]

I have a new obsession, for at least the time being. This was all Molly's doing!

http://www.last.fm/

Yes, of course, I am marswe. She is the poptart. I am not the poptart. Anyway.

This is probably doing nothing for me other than waste my time, but it's a cool waste of time! It logs what you listen to, and in addition to calculating statistics (for numerophiles like myself) it also gives you musical recommendations (for audiophiles like Molly). And then there're neighbors, but I'm scared of mine. They're creepy-lookin'.
YOU WOULD BE SCARED TOO, OK?

Inner workings [15 Feb 2006|08:39pm]
[ music | Nothingface - So Few ]

This is me doing my essay(s).

"You're a monster. You don't know the hate I have inside, if you could see it you'd be terrified, you would kill me at once. But even by killing me you can't free yourself from my hatred. You can kill my body, but I'll never leave you in peace."

The monster is my tongue! See, this taste in my mouth is controlling me. The taste is so bad I...

...bought a pack of eclipse gum instead of a drink.
...frequently stick my tongue out and shake my head, hoping that the air will help. It doesn't, it just makes me look funny, and gets my cheeks wet.
...am tempted to lick my knee, seeing as it is right in front of my face.
...have brushed the back of my tongue to the point of almost bulemia.
...would like to replace my tongue, and get a new one. I'm still under warrantee, the guy said.
...am considering adding another feature to my leatherman: tongue scraper.

...have probably gotten sick.

Damnit. The one day they underpredict the amount of snow is the one day we can't get a snow day out of it.

> Still haven't done my poetry paper (status: rough draft sans very-needed editing)
> Have to write Cooper and Stevens (statii: rough Cooper, no Stevens)
X Have to do senior experience paper (status: nothing. at all) -> done, but so crappily that I am now nauseated and unmotivated. I guess that's the price you pay.
X Physics homework (status: 0 out of 97) -> Done.
X Lacrosse at 10:45 means I have to do all of the above before 10:15, because I will be getting home AFTER MIDNIGHT. -> Canceled.
X Not to mention the whole Mr.Scarpone's-recs-disappearing-off-the-face-of-the-Earth thing. That's quite a nuisance as well. -> emailed him. what else can I do?

I don't really have time for this shoveling. Where's my flamethrower?
